The denoted message is straightforward: a volleyball player blocking an in play ball. It is a documentary image capturing a real moment during a play.

However, the connoted message is layered. The athlete's posture, intensity, and upward motion suggest drive, and the metaphorical climb toward excellence. In this sense, the image speaks not just to sport, but to identity, effort, and transformation

The linguistic message, which often takes the form of a caption, slogan, or overlay text in sports media, may read something like "Pushing Beyond Limits." This anchoring text directs interpretation-what Barthes would call a "relay" rather than simply an anchorage, especially if it is part of a broader narrative or motivational campaign. As Barthes explains, "the text burdens the image, loads it with a culture, a moral, an imagination". The image alone might convey power, but the text transforms that power into a message of perseverance and personal growth. 

This relates to my project as my project is sports media in video format instead of still photos. Although mine is still about the in play aspect mostly is what I think I am going for which could change as I start to edit videos. 

So far for my final project I have started to get some film and making sure that this is the right project for me. I will start editing some soon to see how it comes along.
