In Distorted Time, I wanted to explore McLuhan’s concept of time becoming the new space as we “march backwards into the future.” My video is personal footage of a video of a clock on my iPad, walking feet, and chaotic arcade lights with broken up sounds to reflect the collapse of linear progress. McLuhan’s claim that “we look at the present through a rear-view mirror” goes together with my approach (McLuhan, The Medium is the Massage, p. 63). The reversed and distorted visuals symbolize how our understanding of the future is shaped by echoes of the past.

The sounds were chosen to enhance the distortion as I used a lot of layering. I used the sound of fingers tapping, adding a human element that feels both familiar and unsettling. This subtle, repetitive sound reflects impatience or anxiety, echoing McLuhan’s claim that “electric speed collapses space and time” (p. 65). Combined with static, arcade noises, and muffled voices, the audio creates a layered, chaotic atmosphere. The sound of a car starting symbolizes motion and progress but is mixed with disorienting visuals, questioning whether forward movement is even possible in a broken reality.Blending and distorting these sounds, I sought to immerse the viewer in a experience where time, space, and human presence blur together.
